This is a great old hoopty. Best car I've ever had. It was my daily driver for 6 years and 135k miles. It's so good that I bought another E39 wagon as a replacement.
It has 249k miles now and still runs great. It's got plenty of flaws, but would make a good second car or kid's car or whatever.
The good:
Engine has always been strong and gets 25mpg mixed city/highway
Manual transmission shifts perfectly
New clutch at 200k but old one still looked fine
Driveshaft rebuilt at 200k
New alternator, belts, and pulleys recently
Interior is very clean and leather seats are almost perfect (seat covers used)
Only 3 check engine lights in 6 years (1 gas cap, 1 coil, 1 cam sensor)
The bad:
Windshield crack on passenger side
Headlights foggy
Rear floorboard gets wet in heavy rain
Some rust on rocker panels and wheel wells
Leaks a few drops of oil per day (oil pan, etc.)
Power steering hoses leak a bit
Tires are about 20%
Airbag light recently came on (I think it's the passenger seat sensor)
I have records from the previous owner and my own scribbled notes. There's probably more, but you get the idea. Good car for the money and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across country.
