I just tried started the 740 and no start. It cranks and I hear a slight backfiring out of the intake. My buddy resealed the Vanos units using the Besian systems kit and instructions. We also changed the timing chain, guides, and tensioners. Is it possible he has something misaligned in the Vanos units? I used the locking tools to set the timing and triple checked everything. Any thoughts?
fly pin removed?

Yes, It turns over but won't run.
Vanos units can't cause a no start, I suspect the timing is off, possibly not going full retard on the vanos units?

I think the timing is off as well. Any ideas? I turned both Vanos units counterclockwise, held them in place, and tightened them. I'm stumped.
Redo the timing it might be 180 degrees out, or maybe a little out

When installing the BLOCKS, did you verify that all 4 cams( Intake and Exhaust ) on both BANKS(1 and 2) had the numbers at the end of EACH CAM faced up???
for ex (E 5-8), (E1-4)...All should be facing up and locked at TDC. Vanos should be connected with Voltmeter to make sure zero continuity

Yes I did. I rechecked it today. I noticed the 1-4 intake cam follower will make the cam spring clockwise once the holding tool is removed. This would make it so that the hole in the wheel is never aligned with the hole in the passenger side upper cover. I also noticed that the holes in the wheels would never align with the tools when I'm at TDC. I had to loosen the nut on the vanos unit and turn the wheel to re-position them to be aligned with the tool. How could the wheels get that far off? I had the nut super tight and used the locking tools to do this job.
The bank one intake must be held at TDC (block-locked) and the Vanos rotated counterclockwise to its stop to align the timing wheel to the hole in the upper cover. With the blocks out, turning by hand, the bank one intake will not line up
as it shifts 'advanced' by spring pressure. The bank 2 intake typically doesn't move.
Pin the flywheel with all the numbers up, install the blocks and check the trigger wheels. Make sure the Vanos are rotated fully counterclockwise and pin the wheels.
your case your not getting anything started.... Manually have you turned the crank several times without interferences? if you don`t experience any obstruction then you have a ground issue...Check you starter, battery,
engine wall Ground straps are secured and tight
Backfiring implies you did NOT time the engine correctly.....Again re time the engine and make sure all cams have the E 1-4. E 5-8, I 1-4 and I 5-8...You cant have 3 out of 4 or 2 out 4...4 out 4 need to be facing up and at TDC..

All of this was done the first time. I spun the engine over numerous times before installing. The holes on the pickup wheels would always align every other rotation. When I took the upper covers off to inspect I couldn't get the holes to in the pickup wheels to line up with the front holding tools no matter how many times I rotated it. Weird...
