Hello everyone, I'm having an issue with my 2009/12 E60 LCI (530xd) sedan. There are 230.000 km (143.000 miles) in it.
Sometimes when I'm backing up, mostly when doing Y-turns, while turning the wheel left, there is a constant metallic screeching noise. The volume and the length differs, but usually it is very loud and lasts for 3-4 seconds. It does not always occur, seems very random, but whenever I take the car to a mechanic, it never does, thus he can't help even when I show him a video of it. It usually happens after short, few miles driving periods in the town, according to my observation. It seems to be coming from under the front, but it is hard to localize it.
It is very embarassing in public, driving a nice looking premium car that does this noise.
Any help identifying the source of this issue is much appreciated.

It sounds to me like a power steering pump starving for oil. Are you sure only when reversing?
It seems to stop as you unwind the steering wheel from full lock, consistent with the above guess.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
Thank you for the answer. I'm pretty sure it occurs only when reversing (or at least it is only audible that time).
