Hi all,
I had my M for almost 2 years. I don't drive the car much but everytime I drive the car notice that temp gauge gets well past half way mark when it's not even hot out. Checked coolant level it looks good. Car is completely stock. Anything I should do?

Have you had any reason to add coolant recently (and maybe had an air lock in the system)?
T-stat working ? If it is stuck closed, the coolant won't circulate through the radiator.
Waterpump? Similar problem if the impeller is not pumping coolant through the system.

Never had to add coolant. I assume thermostat is working because I have heat. How do I check water pump? It's not leaking.

The dash gauge is both heavily dampened and inaccurate. Normal is a few degrees left of center, and it takes another 20C to make it move farther. Quit guessing and put a real gauge on it. An OBD2 scanner will be fine.
OP, when you say the temp gauge, you are referring to the coolant temp gauge in the instrument cluster, not the oil temp gauge in the console, right?
My understanding (and maybe I am wrong) is that the T-Stat is going to open to flow coolant to the radiator once the temp gets up to operating temp. Until then, you are going to have warm coolant flowing in the block and thof heater.
If the T-stat is stuck closed, you never get coolant flow through the radiator...and she will overheat.
I dont think "heat" means your thermostat is working.
How about checking the temp of the radiator hoses once the car is warmed up, or check the radiator itself (non-contact thermometer shoud work. If they are not hot, I would assume that the T-stat is not opening, and could be a source of your overheating.
Just my guess.
