2002 325ci 231,000+ miles. I drove 200 miles round trip yesterday and everything was going fine until I was about 3 miles from home. I was sitting at a light and the tach went from 700 RPM to 400 RPM for a brief moment. When I got to the next light the car staled. I was able to restart the car but was running extremely ruff. I was about 2 miles from home at this time going up hill. The car was acting like it was running on 1 cylinder. This morning the car started fine and seemed to be running ok, but haven't taken it on the road yet. Any ideas????
Did the SES light come on? I am sure it did and there will be codes stored in the DME.
So first step will be to pull codes and post them up.
Off the cuff I would say it's the fuel pump going bad.

I use a diagnostic plugin called Carly for BMW. I ran my first scan and I found out that cylinders 4, 5 and 6 were not firing. I cleared the codes and everything went back to normal. After a brief moment I got that hick up again where the RPM went from 700 to 400. I re-ran the scan and found that cylinder 5 was not firing. Cleared the codes and all cylinders are now firing.
What were the codes, exactly?
Stalling at the light reminds me of the cam position sensors slowly failing causing intermittent stalling issues on my car. No codes appeared for me though until many months of random stalls.
I replaced the plugs, they were very bad. But I still have a problem with at least i cylinder (5) that won't fire. I keep resetting codes, but still stops. Any ideas?
Might try swapping injectors. Also as repeatedly asked,
What are the actual codes being displayed?

How many miles on O2 sensors?
I had a similar issue where ECU triggered CE light and toggled to ‘limp’ mode at idle at traffic light.
As I recall I had codes for misfire. My O2 sensors were over 100K miles old, changed them and back to normal.

I keep getting this code:
Motor Control:
Engine / Motor
Cylinder 5 not firing
Code: 0000F2
cylinder 2 not firing
Code: 0000EF
Mass air flow sensor was replaced at 167,900. I have 231,000 now.
I don’t know these codes, but O2 sensors have 100K life.

If O2 sensors have never been replaced, it's time.
Check fuel pressure at fuel rail, observe readings at idle-2000-3000rpm.
I check fuel pressure on wednesday, it was 50
Can you watch live data? That would help narrow down the misfires, but you can also move the coils around after testing them to see if the misfires follow.

Well, this is oddly similar to my experiences with my newly acquired 325 xi. My car seems to ......'fix' it'self .....too! ......Once two weeks ago, for one whole day, it took several more seconds more with the starter engaged before the engine fired.....Yet the next day it starts immediately...has ever since..3 weeks now.....A week ago, the engagement of 'drive' after reverse...out of the driveway....did not make the car move forward...(surprise) .....yet in forward drive it did engage after applying more throttle..(like starved of hydraulic fluid)....now...after doing NOTHING.. no more a problem...shifts like a champ!....?????
