clutch pedal to the floor

Hello all, a few days ago attempted to drive my wife's 05 x5 and when I stepped on the clutch pedal, it just snapped to the floor. lifted it up with my foot, and it did the same thing again. checked the reservoir. no loss of fluid. looked at the clutch master and slave cylinders, didn't see any obvious signs of leaks. Had driven the car a week earlier without any problems. anyone experience these symptoms, and what was the final solution. Thanks
