1986 M535i Zinno w/manual cloth seats. 250k kilometers (150k miles)
This is a DC71 car with no Cat. The original engine in the car dropped a valve on the #1 cylinder. To get the car back on the road I sourced a local M30B34 engine that had been refreshed. It came out of an '85 635 and is a U.S. spec low compression engine. The oil pan has a return port welded on for turbo return line, good for your turbo dreams.
- Getrag 265 tranny. 5-speed. Shifts flawlessly.
- Slick top (No sunroof)
- Non-A/C car
- Power front windows, manual rears
- Rear sunshade
- Headlight aim control (yeah right, who are we kidding)
- Tow package
- M System II Throwing Star wheels (Staggered) w/new Hankook V12s
- ABS
It has not be federalized one bit (Everything, all gauges etc. are original and in Kilometers or in German). Virginia title.
The car is very straight with a couple of small dings. I believe that the front radiator support has been replaced on the car. There was a little rust starting where the support was welded to the inner fender. I have sanded out any rust there and hit it with POR 15. The car has been repainted with 2 stage Zinno whereas there are two different shades of red, 2 stage and single stage are not a perfect match. Fenders and M-tech body kit are not a perfect match. Looks ok depending on the lighting when you can really see the difference. There is a small hole on the M-tech front bumper passenger side. The car shows well though and draws a lot of attention at local Cars & Coffee event.
There is no sign of accident damage other than the radiator support being replaced. The hood looks to be original. Frame rails are straight with no sign of damage or repair. Shock towers and everything under the hood look fine with no sign of repair.
Rust.
There is a small bubbling of rust under the paint around the antenna. There is a small spot on one of the front doors at the very front lower edge that I just found the other day but is only surface rust. A little surface rust on the corner jack points where paint/undercoating was removed from jacking up the car. There was some cancerous rust I found in the bottom of the spare tire well. I have cut out the bad stuff and hit it with POR15 for the moment to stop it. I have been under and around the car and that is all that I can report.
Mechanical.
The car is in decent shape. The only things I know of are the following:
- Slight vibration sometimes when applying brakes (Upper control arms bushings)
- Idles high @ 1,000 rpm
- Needs new high beam switch or cleaning
Recent parts that have been replaced:
- Brake accumulator (Brake Bomb)
- Reference and Speed sensors on bell housing
- New water pump and coolant
- New coolant tank and cap
- New Power steering reservoir filter
- New High Flow fuel pump in tank with new fuel lines. (Eliminated external fuel pump)
- New fuel filter
- New accessory belts
- New trunk gasket
- New tail light gaskets
- Oil and filter
Interior.
- Driver's seat front thigh bolster has been repaired with some stitching where there was obviously a tear.
- Dash has one very small slight crack appearing at center vent, about 1/16". I have stop drilled a very small hole to keep it from spreading
- Aftermarket Blaupunkt stereo. Cassette stuck in it but has period correct songs on it. (Supertramp, etc.)

bump... very clean.
The E28 is by far my favorite 5 series model, and in red it's even better. Stunning. Good luck with the sale!
