    Fuse 10 keeps blowing

    Hello,

My 91 e30 keeps blowing fuse 10. I've isolated the problem to whatever wire runs from the white plastic connecter beneath the shift boot; When I have that connecter unplugged it doesn't blow. Any idea what might be causing the issue?

    Thanks,
    Alec

wire is probably frayed under the boot and grounding causing your fuse to blow. it is mostly likely the back up light circuit. sort of common on older cars.

Hmm, I figured it was a frayed wire, but I've looked under the boot hood and haven't found a thing. Any other locations especially prone to wear? Or easily checked? Thanks.

you might have to remove both the leather and rubber boot under it to trace. the wire passes through a hole in the rubber boot and continues under the car. the reverse switch is mounted near the front of the trans underneath the car and high up. most times you have to get under the car to find and fix the short. 90% sure that's what you have going on.

Hmm, thanks guys. I've gotten the rubber boot out (it's a manual transmission), looks like I'll need to get underneath. Now to find someone with jack locks or some such—it's way too low for me to crawl under.

I would check the reverse light switch wiring under the boot, if it has come unclipped it can wear and short out on the propshaft or exhaust.

One trick is to pull one side of the car up on top of the curb. That might get you enough room to go underneath for an inspection. The risk is someone hitting your car while you're underneath. I wouldn't do this on a busy street, but a parking lot or residential street might be OK. It's also best to have a spotter just standing around.

Just noticed I never updated this thread—I took your advice and pulled her up on the curb. Found the disconnected wire and patched up, good as new. Thanks guys, sorry for the late kudos.
