Engine died @ 85k miles... HELP !

Just got word from the BMW dealership today - the engine in my 2010 535xi has to be replaced... that something came loose in the engine and is breaking it apart from the inside... WHAT?!? Looking for advice on what options I should consider next ...

Hello and welcome to the forum! Really sorry to hear about this! What did they say is the cause? You may be able to find a spare engine at a European parts yard.

I would consider taking it to a independent mechanic. Dealerships tend to suggest the solutions that are the most expensive and they charge the most. For something this expensive a second opinion might be a good place to start.

Independent shops have more ideas than the dealer, all else fails look for a good used engine try lkq

If an 08 N54 actually does need replacement, you will save a lot with an independent shop that has changed a few. I'd check used motor prices on eBay and add about 20 hours of labor and $500 in small parts.
