    S52 Swapped 328is Sputtering Issue

Hi, so i am looking to buy a really clean 1996 328is with a 99’ s52 swapped motor. ECU is an m3 ECU and it was just put in by a BMW mechanic by the previous owner. The p/o mentioned to me that he thinks it was a European ECU which didn’t make much sense to me considering it’s a US s52, but nonetheless it still ran so I figured he was mistaken. When he bought the car it had already been swapped and it had an s52 ECU in it already but his mechanic told him the ECU wasn’t sending the correct signals to the transmission so that’s why he replaced it. No CEL or check lights on at all.

The Traction Control throttle body is removed but it doesn’t have a risistor on it yet as he told me could be one of the reasons it sputters.

Okay so the sputtering/bogging: It’s sputters under hard acceleration in 1st gear exactly as if the traction control is kicking in but it obviously isn’t the ASC because that system was removed. If I gas it half throttle in 1st it won’t do it at all, and then 2-5th gear no matter how hard I accelerate it doesn’t bog out. Also it bogs when I gas it hard around a corner as if it’s traction control. The car doesn’t die, it simply loses all power for a split second then accelerates hard, then losses power again for a second, then accelerates and so on until I shift into second.

Also it doesn’t rev past 7k. My m52 325i will hit the rev limiter and bounce at 7k no problem, and this s52 max redlines at 8k but it won’t rev past 7k at all.

So the guy was telling me it is probably due to no resister on the ASC wires, a bad sensor somewhere, or bad traction due to mix match tires, but obviously those things have nothing to do with it sputtering. I’m just looking to narrow down my search more.
    Thanks for the help!

... so which ECU do you have in there now? A bit difficult to follow. You need to have the M3 software on the ecu, or an M3 ecu for that engine.
No, the ASC missing will not cause 'sputtering'.

The ABSOLUTE max rev limit on a stock S52 is 7200, even that is a bit excessive. You will stress the crankshaft way too much and cause damage, then valve float comes a few hundred rpm after. 7,000 rpm is a good safe point. 8000rpm will destroy that engine. Don't even think about it.

Right now it has an s52 ECU that was bought and installed by his mechanic. He said it might be a European ECU, not quite sure what he means, but I want to give you all the details.

And okay on the revs, I wasn’t planning on taking up to 8k all the time, I was just weirded out that it stopped at 7k.

To allow 7000 rpm, there have to be some modifications already done to the software. Stock is ~6700-6800.

If someone messed with the rpm limit, then there's no telling if they disabled DTCs because it's OH sooo cool to stop your car from signaling when something is wrong.
