Video tutorial on how to replace the BMW hood shocks. For this particular video I am using a 1997 BMW 540i, E39 body style. Eventually these will wear out and fail, meaning they’ll no longer keep the hood in place. Minimal tools are required for the replacement and this repair can be done in under 15 minutes. These should also be done in pairs as they both get the same amount of wear and are most likely in the same mechanical condition.
Tools/Supplies Needed:
-quick grip clamp
-new replacement hood shocks
-standard screwdriver
Procedure:
-in order to help hold the hood into place, I’m using a quick grip clamp to support the one shock when one is disconnected
-I wouldn’t totally depend on this, keep your tools and new replacement shock within reaching distance, and try to keep the hood up with your head or hand just to be safe
-using a standard screwdriver, push the retaining clip towards the end of the shock connection
-be careful with the screwdriver so it doesn’t slip and damage something
-to remove the bottom connection, do the same thing
-I have to remove the cover on my cabin filters in order to get access to bottom of the shock
-again using the standard screwdriver to push the clip out
-then pull the shock out of it’s location, you may need to twist or roll it out of it’s location
-ensure the ball pivots are clean, no need to apply any lubricant as these shocks usually come pre-greased
-push on the new shocks, they’ll snap into place and the clips should be in the correct location, but if not use the standard screwdriver to push them into place
-they should be centered with the pivot
-move the quick grip clamp over to the other shock and again using the screwdriver to push the clip out of it’s location
-do the same on the bottom clip too after the cabin filter cover has been removed
-remove the hold shock
-and snap the new one into place
-now we have a properly working hood
