I've lived long enough with a shift boot that isn't for an E23, it kinda fits, but pops out of the wood console all the time.
I'll even take the proper plastic piece that fits into the wood console and have a boot made or adapted.
Let me know.
Thanks

There's a guy near me that makes them, was going to stop by, I can use mine as a template- he sells leather boots for like $20.00-$25.00 (don't remember) I'll have him make make two-
You're pretty awesome Dave, I don't care what they say...

Hey Jay, I think I have the bottom ring. It may or may not be warped a little from heat and time. Still has a book on it as well. I was going to hold onto it in the event that I swap my center console from auto to manual but I don't see that ever happening.
51 16 1 880 799 was still available from BMW about a year ago. they were about $9, but are now plastic instead of metal.
Looks like a local friend is willing to give this a try, we are giving him a reasonably intact piece to use as a template.

lol...
I believe the factory boot is still available. I am using the factory retaining ring (plastic) but before I found one of those, made something out of sheet metal that worked almost as well.
This boot is at least 20 years old. Used a conditioner on it about 5 years ago to keep it soft.
Leather is no longer available, only the non leather is available.
