Hi Guys, it's been a long long time since I asked for help and you all have always hit it on the head. I'm a little stumped on this noise. I found someone on the internet that captured probably a better 10 second audio clip than I could. It's on a 02' 530i sport, m54/ZF automatic with 75k. I just put a new CCV in thinking It was the culprit but apparently it was not. Plugged into DIS and INPA, Nothing is in the DME active or shadow memory.

Thanks in Advance

Is this on a cold engine?
Sounds like an electric motor revving down. Could it be the HVAC blower? Turn the system off and try again.

Electric auxiliary water pump perhaps?

Does it do it when the engine is hot?
If not then I'd gues it's the secondary air pump.
It can be cold or hot. HVAC on or off. It almost sounds like escaping air when doing a compression test. The secondary air pump seems feasible. I have never had a problem with it on my previous two but I will dig further on that road. Thanks for the ideas.

The pump only runs for a short time after a cold start.

Thanks Ed. I checked that whole system for vacuum leaks anyway. Ran the pump and cycled the solenoid with the GT1 its definitely not the noise maker. Again thanks for the heads up this was a part of the M54 that I never looked twice at so I learned something.
The woosh of air can be heard clearly at the air box after shut down. Not sure yet where this poof of air originates. I am sure its not a problem, just never had it on my other 530's. Possibly associated I can hear a light whistle (like a vacuum leak) barely off the idle step that immediately goes away, no rpm will keep it as a constant. I have been through every rubber hose and boot on this thing and all connections look good. I replaced one because it was starting to look old and get a little flaky on the outside.
I appreciate the help so far. Eric
All three of my 530is run/ran (until totalled) perfectly; all of them make this sound. No idea what it is, but I wouldn't be worried about it.

Yknow I think I had this sound for a little while. Never had it... then did... then didn't. If its same sound then would imply some 'system' that's roughly same whether V8 or I6...
Maybe evap system? I did tinker w/ my evap connections and solenoid connection etc. and made my evap code go away, wondering if some vacuum was getting drawn into the tank system then leaking back down on shutdown? Just brainstorming...

I suspect it's a vacuum reservoir somewhere discharging, like the brake booster or something. It seems to me like a sucking sound.

I have a whistle at idle which goes away on the slightest touch of the throttle. Changed the injector "O" Rings and air hoses, cleaned throttle body. It seems to be coming from the induction manifold but damned if I can find it. Any ideas?

Replace the intake gaskets and report back.
The intake manifold is plastic. When the silencer cover is removed, the intake noise is apparent.

Uhhh.. Also maybe try posting in the Z3 forum.
Hell man, the car isn't remotely similar, and maybe if it was an M54 engine like OP here I'd give ya something for the cross-over, but you're an M44 4-cyl engine.... not only a generation + back, but not even the same number of cyls!

If you are talking about that last sound, like air escaping, it is normal for M54 engines. It does sound louder than usual but that might be because the hood is open and the mic is near the engine.
I was also concerned about this noise until I read this: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...off-M54-engine
Now that I have a M52tu, I miss the M54's "sigh of relief" when I cut the engine. LOL!
