Changed the oil and found this in the drain pan. I'm positive that it's the ear of a plastic clip, but since when do they use plastic snap-in clips in an engine?

Very strange. Seems like it must have gotten in there some other way.
What year/model/engine?
2001 Z3 3.0i -Oxford Green/Sandbeige
2016 428xi -Estoril Blue II/Black
2018 430iC- Estoril Blue II/Black
2018 330it - Melbourne Red/Venetian Beige/Black
Could be part of the plastic they use on chain tensioners. But yeah, what engine....
e30 84 340i m6x powered.
e34 89 535i 5speed - current DD
e24 89 635csi - maybe a DD?
e34 93 525i (m50tu) - gone
e39 540i 6spd m-sport - gone
e53 x5 4.4l - gone
e30 89 325i (m20) - gone
Looks like the ear off a clip, sincerely doubt that it's any part off a tensioner. My engine is in my sig. 35i
Usually tensioner pieces are orange colored stained brown from oil but you can tell it was orange at one point. I can’t think of anything that it would be specifically but are you sure the pan was clean before you drained the oil?
99.9% sure, yeah. I'm bringing the truck to the dealer next week, was thinking of offering $100 to the 1st tech who could successfully diagnose where the hell that piece came from. You know, for incentive...
Vehicle's under warranty, so now's the time to fix it if it's needed.

Well, brought it in and nothing. tech thinks it may be a piece from the chain tensioner but said if it doesn't make noise, leave it alone. "If" I insisted that they check it out, $800 to take apart the front of the engine to look for the culprit....
I had them document the event in my file. Anything goes south after the warranty is over and I'll have proof that I brought it to their attention.
