    E36 budget LS swap *Auto*

Hey everyone! Just joined the page.
I'm currently doing a 5.3 swap with a 4l60. Have CXracing engine mounts and trans Xmember. Had to modify the crossmember to clear the oil pan and make a plate to extend the tranny mount back. Engine fits with the truck oil pan but it rubs the subframe and hangs too low. Fbody or retrofit pan will be ordered soon. My plan is to run the exhaust forward with turbo headers but not run a turbo (yet). I'll add some kind of muffler and try to run the exhaust to the rear next to the passenger side motor mount. Going to run a stand alone harness and make my own gauge cluster. I'd like to do a rmvb and a ratchet shifter but that's low on the priorities. The transmission tunnel was close to fitting. With the cx racing mounts, I could have adjusted the engine forward more but I want to leave room for a turbo, just in case. I had to hammer an inch or 2 in next to the shift lever shaft and upper passenger side bellhousing. I also had to cut away a small portion of the sheetmetal around the unibody rail to clear the right rear corner of the trans pan. The driveshaft would be easy to make work, but I think I'll have our local truck shop make a 1 piece shaft instead. The passenger side truck manifold actually fits upside down in the passenger side. But the driver's side has a brake line in the way. I might delete the ABS instead of worrying about how I'm going to relocate the pump and still have room for everything else. Truck alternator position and truck interested both sit too high. Looking at using LSsimple accessory bracket and an aftermarket car intake. My plan for the car is to be a weekend warrior on the drag strip and take it to a few road courses, and the car shows and cruise nights. Hope to have it track ready by April.

    Edit:

I have done this exact swap. Except I made my own headers. Do you have the steering shaft installed? Because if you did, I would think a manifold on the driver’s side would interfere with the shaft. Your trans must sit lower than mine because I had to switch out the shift shaft for a 700r4 shorter shaft or else I would’ve had to beat the tunnel in so far it would’ve hit the gas pedal! Also don’t even think about using a truck or even the lh8 (muscle car) oil pan. They both hang down too low. Use an f body pan. It fits perfectly. Post some pics of what you’re working with.

My brother gave me his v band turbo headers to use if they fit. I'm going to work in it this weekend. Fit the radiator, install the new fuel pump and Corvette filter/regulator, and rework the harness. I need to get an oil pan ordered soon. I'm also needing an LS1 intake. I found some on CL for $250 or there's an aftermarket sheetmetal intake with rails and throttle body for $550. But yes, I had very little clearance issues with the trans.

That or just embed via Tapatalk. I think there's a sticky on a few of the subforums taking about hosting options.

This is the condition I bought the car in and paid $200. No seats, interior wiring chopped up, front clip was unbolted, no radiator, hoses, belts, battery, or intake manifold. The guy started parting out the car before I got there to buy it and gave me a handful of bolts. Very frustrating. Also don't have a title. I told him I'd pay him another $100 for the title. That's the main reason this will be a almost full blown track car. But for $200, you can't expect much.

    Edit:
This is what the car was advertised as.

I think these are E46 manual seats that just barely fit.

Figured out why my pictures aren't working. I haven't made 40 posts yet. I'll get to it quickly so I can add some. I'll also add the pictures to the post above.

Got my front accessories figure out over the weekend. Left the PS pump in the factory truck location, but put the alternator in the AC compressor spot and using the AC belt. Very pleased with it. Low and tight to the engine.

Are you not concerned about the driveshaft angle since you have the trans mount stud not in the middle hole? It looks like the trans tail shaft is angled toward the driver’s side.

It is slightly angled. That's the CXracing engine mounts. I'm not too worried. I'll get it going and see if it wears ujoints fast or has a vibration.

Got the driveshaft back from the shop and installed it with the good trans. Fits perfect. Also thought about using the mounting location for the stock carrier bearing for a driveshaft loop. Need to figure out what to do about the shift cable.

Also got to building the headers. I got the driver's side to clear the booster and the ABS pump and line. I'd like to tweek the mount to get the pump closer to the fender well and maybe build a heat shield, especially if I turbo it. But I ordered DEI high temp paint and header wrap, should help. But for my first time building headers, I feel like I did pretty well.

The headers are almost finished. Just ordered the parts to relocate the coil packs to the frame rail. But I've got the vbands and O2 bungs welded on, and coated & baked them over the weekend. Just need to wrap them with DEI header wrap and they'll be complete. I'll be finishing the rest of the exhaust this weekend after work. Should have first fire up this coming weekend.
