Just purchased a 2005 BMW 545i for my daughter car has 128k and has been serviced by local BMW dealership it's entire life. I had it at the shop today for trans shifting issue and their fix is new transmission which was quoted at $6700. Been reading forums on known issues and this seems to be a known issue and most people say replace metronocs and some say just replace seloniods. Could I get a little feed back.
Hello and welcome to the forum! Before spending any money, I would suggest doing a diagnostic with INPA; this should give you an idea of the extent of the damage on the trans. Did the shop do this already?

The big question what are the adaptation numbers in clutches any over 300 not good. It could be seals between the valve body and the case, but if the numbers are to high, it still may act up after replacing the seals.
I ordered the bactavian technic software and cable would I be able to see the adaptation numbers with that ?
I don't know we have autologic and ista
Whole tranny replacement is likely overkill, try resetting adaptations first if no fix replace fluid and filterpan then there this:

replacing solenoids or the whole Mechatronics unit is a lot cheaper and will, fix most if not all,issues....
lots of threads on this on various bmw forums.
hope this helps

Well I started the valve body rebuild replacing everything, zip kit, seloniods seperator plate and goimg
to reset transmission when complete.
Update: Rebuilt valve body, new seloniods, Sonnax Zip kit, plus new fluids filter. And it shifts great no more hard upshit 1-2 or down shift 2-1. Also learned the biggest problem is the valve body accumulator rubber plunger fails this causes the hard 1-2 upshit vise versa. Sonnax fixes that and supplies replacement. Springs instead of rubber plungers. May take 3-4 weeks for the shifting to get perfectly smooth after reset but definitely 100% better already.
