We have a 2007 BMW 550I with a 160K and blowing oil smoke out of the exhaust like theres no tomorrow. The body and interior are in excellent condition. Are the 4.8 engines reliable? In other words, can these engines run up to 300k with proper maintenance or are these engine constant problematic engines? I can find engines for sale for $1500 with 90k on them but I hear all these awful stories of alternator oil seal problems or coolant tube issues. To top it off, just a head gasket set and engine gasket set total $700 which is crazy. Each head gasket alone is $160. Is this car worth repairing with 160k or are these engines just simply junk? I find it odd that not one junkyard across the United States on car-part.com has an engine over 200k that would make me believe that these engines have longevity.
