Hi all,
I'm new to e46 but not BMWs, having just sold my 2013 e92 320d and picked up a cheap e46 318Ci to use for a little while.
The car drives perfectly except sometimes when I am in low-medium revs in first gear (like when I am parking) a very loud shuddering/banging sound comes from front offside. See video I just took of this today (the noise starts at around 4 seconds).
Does anyone have any idea what this is and is it a common issue with these cars?
Cheers
Welcome to the Forum!
Just to help rule out an engine problem, is the SES light on?
I had a hard time hearing the noise, do you feel any vibrations in the steering wheel when it does this?
Also manual or auto box?

Thanks for the reply! Yes sorry I should have said it's a manual gearbox. No warning lights on.
Yes I can feel the wheel shaking a bit but not that much, it's more the noise.
It is a bit hard to hear from that video, you probably need to turn up the volume high, but in person it is very loud, to the point of being quite shocked when I heard it first!

Humm does this occur as you go over small bumps? If so I am thinking that it would be the FCAB's aka Front Control Arm Bushings.
They tend to last about 8 years on the original and about half that on cheap ones.

No the surface makes no difference, the video above was when driving on a smooth car park surface!
