bought cheapest ($90 ea.) summer performance tires for wheels I wasn't sure about keeping for long. grip and noise level are great on those, but they lasted ONLY around 6mo. and 10,000 miles on FL roads. alignment was done. just a review.

Well I guess that is what you get with a cheap tire. I would tend to think if you got a chance to drive your car back to back with a better tire you would think twice about saying the grip was great.
You're probably right Jim. I'm coming from non BMW so assumed it was from tire. What do you recommend for 19"? The problem is I'm not sold on wheels so I didn't want to invest a ton into tires
No point in cheaping out on tires IMO. There aren't really big price gaps between the cheapo tires and the good ones, unless you start getting into track tires (and even then it's not that bad). In my case the cheapest possible set might be like $450-500, but I can get nice Pilot Sports of some flavor for like $650 so it's not a huge difference for something that you'll use for years.
As far as recommendations:
All Season Street:
Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3
Summer Performance Street:
Michelin Pilot Super Sport or 4S - these will also work for light track duty
I'm not a Michelin superfan or anything, it's just what I've found to be the best over the years. They last well, especially the all seasons, and they're at a decent price point. Should be able to easily get 30K+ miles on the all seasons on the street.
If you're into track days, I currently run Hankook R-S4's on my summer/track wheels and they're really sticky. Also in that same category are Dunlop Star Specs, Bridgestone RE71R, and others. You won't get many miles on any of these due to the low treadwear though.
1999 M3/2/5 - Titanium Silver - Track/Weekend Toy
You can not go wrong with the Michelin Performance tires. Conti and Bridgestone are making excellent tires as well and normally are cheaper. Anytime I can help let me know.
+1 on the PS AS/3 for day-to-day driving. You'll spend ~500 more than the cheap chinese junk but won't hate them every day. Another way to think of it is the stopping distance is going to be better and that $500 is probably only half your insurance deductible; that extra $500 is potentially a bargain. I also get the Z rated version of the PS for ~15 more because it's slightly heavier not because I drive 150+.
