OK, doing a cooling system refresh on my wife's E46 330i. I pulled the expansion tank off the coolant distribution pipe and this spring, bushing and thumb tack shaped thing fell out. What the heck is it and how does it go back together? You can see these parts in the bottom in the photo.

That is the coolant thermostat for your automatic transmission. Its now broken - a common occurrence when replacing the expansion tank.
Can't copy the picture from realoem but... #4 below? And it just sits in the bottom connection from the exp tank? Thanks

Yes, the thermostat sits between(and inside) the expansion tank mount (connected to radiator) and air expansion tank. Depending where you buy the tank, it usually comes with it. And the c-clamp too.
May have to get resourceful/physical to remove broken remains of the tran thermostat. Its interior cross-brace will break and usually end up having to grab along the edge -- it will come out. Think I finally succeeded using needle-nose locking pliers. GL

AT thermostat, not cheap for something so small. You have to buy it separately.
