I believe franco has the no-buttons totally-widescreen like-NBT-but-cheaper unit. This one looks like the OEM widescreen nav unit with buttons but has Android guts.

yall should see what I did....I stuck a Cell phone magnet on the middle of my 16:9 screen and slap my I-phone 7Plus over it...It fits the 16:9 perfect...screw OEM

same company and I like my widescreen one it cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ so I was giving those that want to save money on a cheaper version same vendor.

franco90, thanks for the answer to the plug and play, I forget to mention, the reason I'm considering an up grade is that by all indications my navigation unit is going out. Does this new stand along or does it interface with the existing navigation unit? All I really want/need is a radio, CD and GPS I don't need all of the other bells and whistles. Thanks

no this is A STAND ALONE UNIT YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS
RADIO AND YOU NEED TO REMOVE CD CHANGER AND STUFF.
THEM U PLUG IN HARNESS TO HANRESS AND YOU ALL DONE

it all PLUG and PLAY
1.remove your old radio I guess since you have a 95 you have a tape deck
2. remove the MIDS
3. unplug Cd changer
4. all you have to do know is connect the OEM harness the after market harness and the plug into the radio.
5. plug in FM antenna
6. run and plug up gps antenna
7. put all car all back together and you done

I thought the problem with this form factor was that it would hit against the duct work in the dash. Is that not the case with this one?

And I still have a hard time with these companies including a cd drive. It adds complexity, bulk and cost. I haven’t had a CD for 5+ years. Sorry... rant over.

franco90, thanks again, I'm going to do the "'01 first but if this works out, I'll consider one for my '95 which radio has been changed twice and is on the frizz again. The '95 has what appears to be a bar between the MID and cassette/ sound selector. maybe later I'll see if they offer one for my "98 540. Can the GPS antenna remain in the dash ? Do I need any of the options as said above I just need a radio/GPS and CD? Thanks

Same here, '01 w/ GROM. Works OK but would be great to go with something more integrated.

1) no need to shout, I was genuinely asking for confirmation that you didn’t have any fitment issues. This is the one thing I would love to be able to upgrade on the E38.

Ah... I read through your entire DIY thread. Very nice work and thank you for posting. I see the unit you installed does NOT have the CD/DVD player which is awesome. That was the point of my rant. You can have much better fitment if you don’t have to deal with that bulk in the back of the unit.

My confusion was the original link in this thread drops into a product that does have the CD/DVD player, so I was concerned about whether or not that would fit. I think I like the looks of the wide screen without the buttons any way.

No that the one I have LOL it just preference and yes you can add dvd player to my unit.
I was just throwing ideas out there since some people are on budget.

My concerns were with how well it fit in the original hole and what modifications is any had to be done that way. My car does not have any navigation system and I would love to find an aftermarket unit that has android guts where I can put in some navigation of some kind. Was there any trimming or anything like that which was needed? I wonder if we would be better off to get a group buy thing going or ask for a discount from the manufacturer for Bimmer Forum people that meantioned a secret code like E38 or something. Has anyone talked to the distributor about something like this? sounds like there are more than just a few of us that might like to go this way.
