Have I screwed up installing e36 rear wheel bearings?

After installing new wheel bearings (e36 rear) the wheel hub can be 'wobbled' up and down a bit. When the driveshaft nut is tightened this wobble goes away.

I'm pretty sure I installed the bearing correctly (pressing on the outer race when installing in the knuckle, pressing on the inner race when installing the spindle).

Did I balls-up the install or does the spindle wobble noticably without a driveshaft installed?
