Faint Steering Wheel Squeal

Mine started doing this:





Any ideas what could it be? Noise is quite faint, even a soft radio on would drown it. Also only appears when car is on.


2012 328i sDrive with 45k kms on it.

It's the steering column bushing at the base of the column where it goes through the firewall.
remove kick panel and apply silicone paste but to VERY hard to get it inside the bushing. I usually glob some around where I want it and use gentle compressed air to blow it in. The noise is coming from where the white plastic ring contacts the rubber of the bushing. You have to spread the bushing open a little to see the white plastic ring.

Would this also be it, if only the car is running? I turned the wheel when it was off and it doesn't seem to do it.
