    Trouble with the alarm

Hi! Since I bought the car the alarm wasn’t wotking, the fuses are fine, the door locks work with the key, both doors and trunk open and close, I changed the battery on the remote and tried to program it but the alarm doesn’t respond so I’d like to know if anyone has the same problem?

Many of our cars did not come with an alarm--it was optional. The car is prewired for an alarm, but there is no actual alarm controller installed. This may be your issue.

Check behind the glovebox for the alarm module.

That doesn't mean it came with an alarm--a prior owner who wanted an alarm may have purchased the remote in the hopes that was all it needed, only to discover what you have discovered--no alarm installed. Also, why would you want an alarm? It is a petty annoyance at best--you should consider it's not working a blessing--now you don't have to bother disabling it in the middle of the night with angry neighbors breathing down your neck. Here in the US, the very last thing a person would conceive of upon hearing an alarm go off is that someone is steeling a car. If we called the police to report an alarm going off, they would either laugh at us, or just arrest us for wasting police business and making false reports. Do people respond to car alarms differently in Mexico?

The 2001 and 2002 Z3 came with a remote to lock and unlock the car, but the alarm was optional and used the same remote.

Thanks! Indeed it is a 2001, locking and unlocking the doors with the remote doesn’t seem to work as well would it be all related?

There are sensors on the hood, radio each door and trunk. With the alarm if one of those fail, the system will chirp three times. I'm not sure if it does the same thing with the remote locking. Do you get any chirps, or does it just do nothing when you press the lock/unlock button?

There’s no chirping, only the red light on the key blinks but nothing else.

If you have the factory alarm and siren installed, pressing and holding the two remote buttons simultaneously will unmute/mute the siren beep when locking and unlocking.

You can also hold the lock button to put the alarm in panic mode.

Thanks Abel. I just tried this and it worked. I've been wondering why my siren didn't chirp when arming. FYI you must hold both buttons until you hear it chirp 3 times to unmute
