Never had this problem before but my fuel door won't open on my e36 m3. Car is unlocked and everything but I cannot get it open. I tried the manual release and pulled until I felt as though it was going to break. Any ideas of how to open this door? Recently had a complete brake job and tire change, have anything to do with it?
Thanks
When you pulled the emergency lock release, how far did you pull it? It only needs to be pulled 1". If you pulled it several inches, that means the cable is no longer connected to the locking pin. Take the tail light and battery covers off. Pull the trunk liner towards the inside of the car, be careful not to hit the tail light bulb sockets. You will see the black lock pin, pull it to the rear of the car.

Is it odd that my car (98 M3 4dr) doesn’t have any sort of release lever or remote opening? Mine just pulls open

yes, your 98 M3 4dr has it, and my 98 M3 4dr too, as all have them http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=41_0808

Just open the flap, at the lower portion of the flap there is a kind of hook, and on the opposite side of that on the chassis you can see a tiny, maybe 2-3 mm round hole where the lock pin comes out when locked.
