Truly amazing Alec. i can't imagine how exciting that must have been to be there. I think the new 8 is an incredible car, and your car looked stunning next to it. Well done!
Desecrator of all things Sacred
Great video. The truly sad part of the whole thing was that BMW did not put the car on display at the LEGENDS OF THE AUTOBAHN show which is the oldest and largest gathering of BMW enthusiasts during the Monterey car week. The car wasn't on display at Laguna Seca Raceway either, which attracts the most people of any event of the week. BMW's marketing people don't seem too bright to me,,,but what do I know...
Really nice job on the video! Congrats.
After watching the video a few times (and pretending I was Alec, Taylor, or Gary!) I think I am finally at peace with the new car. Mr. Buckingham used some key phrases that have helped me accept his new design for what it is. "Sympathetic themes and design points"... "so much time gone"... "they both speak to each other but are different snapshots in time".
I've discovered that my initial hesitation in embracing the new eight concept was that there was so much of a design gap between the two body shells. My brain wanted to make a connection that just wasn't there. We never had a facelift 8 series, or a next-generation chassis to replace the E31; even though the 3 series, 5 series, 6 series, and 7 series we're all getting updated throughout the years with highly visible lineage between the model years.
As much as I wanted this new car to pay homage to the original in as many ways as possible, I now accept that just too much time has passed between them; there's nothing there to bridge the gap. Over the last 20 years, there were at least one (or two) E31 replacement design(s) that never existed.
Thanks again Alec for putting this video together - must have been a very memorable day for all of you!

This was such a joy to watch! Excellent job on the video.
Great video. The only disappointment was I was expecting Taylor to test drive the new 8 at the end!

Fantastic video, Alec!
I completely agree with designers van Hooydonk and Buckingham, that we cannot expect the new G14/15 to resemble the original E31 coupe.
There are simply too many generations between them, for one to be an evolution of the other.
However, the E31 was an enduring, modern design which still possesses a kind of timeless beauty.
I'm currently struggling to see these qualities reflected in the new 8-series concept.
I'm also unconvinced by the 'design-speak' that John Buckingham uses to explain away that grille - a feature that is clearly at odds with his previously stated design philosophy for the car: [quote] “It’s about lush, full surfaces. When I was first drawing it, I wanted a flow." [unquote].
I know, I've not viewed the car in person, but from every possible camera angle I've seen so far, there is no 'lushness' or 'flow' exuding from that grille, that I can ascertain.
In fact, it's possibly the most incongruous design feature I've seen on any BMW to date....the eyes do not lie, as they say.
There's no doubting that Buckingham and the BMW Designworks team would have debated and agonized over this startling aspect of the concept car.
But, while they're all very good designers/engineers, it takes a great engineer to (a) concede that they went too far off track with a design, and (b) make the necessary adjustments.
Let's hope they're listening to all the feedback on this aspect of the car, and agree to tone it down a little for the production model.
