    Beam Team's 2JZ E36

Whats up everyone, my name is Tyler and I've been drifting for nearly five years now. My brother and I both bought a cheap/stock 328is' so that we can to go out to drift events and not worry about destroying our daily's. So when I first got it, I took out the interior like an idiot (wish I had it now). But I also added coilovers, bucket seat, and a steering wheel. Unfortunately I didn't know much about cars at the time so I ended up buying one with a bad headgasket. Drove on it like that for a year before swapping in an s52. Fast forward through the years and now I have a car that is currently stripped and getting a whole makeover and a motor swap. Next year I am going to compete in ProAm for 2018... having done TopDrift Limited for the past three years with good results (two 1st place championships and one 2nd place) I feel like I have a pretty decent shot.

Anyways, here's a basic list of whats done to my car:
    - MG Solutions angle kit
    - Feal Coilovers
    - Full cage + bashbars
    - MG Solutions lower/upper arms
    - Big Duck Club overfenders
    - Welded Diff
    - M3 rear end swap

And here's the main list of items on my agenda:
    - 2jz single turbo (shooting for 400whp) using the E36 ZF trans with the Collin's adapter kit
    - Clean the chassis up (spent many hours cutting and cleaning with the grinder)
    - Rewire the chassis
    - Paint interior/exterior/engine bay

I did have a thread on here a while ago, but never really updated it... hopefully I will with this one.

Only did this because the metal was warped from hits to both sides.

My brother and I bought ourselves a Lincoln 180 so that we can start to do some of our own work
    20170916_190219.jpg

Order from Drift Motion for all the maintenance goodies
    Attachment 610814

Started diving in on the motor by stripping all the unnecessary crap off
    20170916_130108.jpg

Got the 2JZ almost stripped down now, but I couldn't resist mocking up the goods
    IMG_20170919_085707_445.jpg

That leads off to today... I still have a lot of work ahead of myself but I'm slowly getting there.
Currently the motor is nearly stripped down to the long block. The agenda now is to get the front cover off to service the cams & timing belt items, at which point I'll start putting everything back together.

A slightly more detailed list of chassis work to do:
Swap rear diff bushings to poly
    Diff brace
    Close off rear end
    Rear seat delete panel
    Rewiring
    Switch panel (bought an Arc8000)
    Finish E46 dash
    Radiator sprayer
    Install speakers back in
    Tranny tunnel reinforced
Get interior & engine bay painted
    Custom driveshaft
    Body Kit
    Exterior paint

And here's my current parts list for the 2jz:
    Rev9 Turbo manifold
No-name intake manifold, no-name fuel rail, throttle body, & 800cc injectors (got a killer deal on this from Essa so I couldn't resist)
Greddy thermostatic sandwich plate with an oil Cooler
    NST Pullies
    Crankcase breather/catch can
    Rear sump oil pan

*Currently working on a potential sponsorship for a BorgWarner turbo and Adaptronic ECU
Once I get the turbo decided I'll start ordering more hotside parts

A lot of the current progress was very quickly skimmed over... but now that I actually have a thread created I'll keep much better track of the build and try to go more in depth.
I would have added more pictures of the current setup but I was struggling with just getting these posted. Feel free to follow me on Instagram @beamteam_tyler for anything that wasn't shown during the past work I've done.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask!

Thanks guys, hope I don't disappoint haha

So last weekend I got most of the maintenance done on the motor.
Cam seals/timing belt/idler pulley/front main seal/tensioner/water pump/thermostat all replaced. Also tried cleaning the block and accessories the best I can... which was a tedious process.
First time doing any of this work on the motor and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, but it took a while cause I wanted to make sure I do everything right.

I was trying to film a majority of the tear down process, but my camera took a shit near the end so the footage ended up basically being worthless... which means a don't have a lot of photos

Currently waiting for a delivery so that I can get my oil pan on (didn't know there was an o-ring for the oil pickup). Once the pan is on I can do the rear main seal and hook up the adapter/transmission so that I can finally mock it in my car.

I need to find a welder locally to get some aluminum bits welded up (water pipe and AN bungs on my valve covers), along with another two or three things and the motor is basically done.

Yesterday was also the first day of ASB so I went to hangout and watch some drifting (and to hopefully get some ride alongs). I didn't think I would have people letting me drift their cars, but I actually got to get behind the wheel of two cars... and who would turn that down! I don't have any photos or videos yet, but my brother took some outside footage so I should be able to get my hands on that shortly.

First was my buddy David Lim's is300 with a near stock 2jz. This was my first time ever driving a jz. He had the boost turned down a little so it was probably around 300whp, but it still ripped!

Picture from my last event for reference.
    IMG_0162073117copyIG.jpg

The second car was also a 2jz... but this one was around 500hp. By far the fastest drift car I have ever drifted.
I'm sure a bunch of you have seen it before but its DJ Lloyd's (@driftaru) STI. He threw some bald tires on for me to play with so it was a little loose however it was still a blast! Extremely grateful for him letting me get behind the wheel and beat on it.
His transmission of choice was the e46 smg (manual converted) which was rad to see.

    Picture for reference.
    12748237_879026722212025_833865383_n.jpg

After driving both I definitely feel I made the right decision in going single straight off the get.

I'll get some videos posted when I can.

That Rev9 turbo manifold looks pretty nice for the price in pics. How is it in the hand? Seem like good quality?

And do you mind commenting briefly on your considerations/decision to go to the 2J instead of building an S52 or M52?

The main problem with the turbo manifold is that it doesn't really fit right now... I'm going to have to clearance the bolt holes a little bit so that it actually slides on. Kind of a bummer but whatever.

Also the reason I went with a jz over an m52 turbo was basically preference. I have always loved jz's ever since I got into drifting and knew that I would be happier with it over a turbo BMW motor. I was actually originally planning to do a 1jz, but there were a few guys that I know that had just swapped them in so i just said f*ck it and went 2j. I do not regret this decision haha
The dollar per horsepower is more for the JZ but its well worth it to me.

Thanks for elaborating on that decision making process, much appreciated!

So after you elongate some bolts holes (not too much I hope), do you think that turbo manifold will fit then?

Figured I would make use of the 7 hour drive back from WinterJam and give some long overdue updates!

Collins 2jz to ZF adapter is installed. I wasn't too thrilled with with the kit during installation, but apparently he is rolling out updates to the kit to fix the the pilot bearing issue. I actually had to trim down the one supplied by them by about 10mm.

Got it dropped in, however I'm not too happy with how these mounts make the motor sit so I bought a set of Excessive Mounts in hopes that it'll fit much better.
    20171029_173943.jpg

Decided to throw an S54 valve cover on and it looks pretty sick, so maybe once everything is done I'll see about fitting one on
    20171028_172510.jpg

Thanks to Dani Morand for the info about swapping a Mercedes 190e brake booster in to gain much needed clearance for my intake manifold.
    20171105_112941.jpg

    20171105_153322.jpg

I'm also running into fitment issues with the Q45 90mm throttle body... so I ordered a different TB which I'm hoping will be a little slimmer and look much better then this one.

Got the power steering routed and all finished up... Chase Bays high pressure line and decided to use the stock reservoir to save a couple bucks. Pretty happy with how it came out!
Only issue is apparently the JDM PS pump will not work as a bunch of JZ friends told me I'll need a USDM TT pump, bolt on swap though so no biggie.

    20171203_162607.jpg

Obviously had to add some more gold wherever I could
    20171126_140857.jpg

I am also excited to announce my sponsorship with Adaptronic. Going to be running the M2000 to control the JZ, pumped to how this bad boy does!
    20171105_152253.jpg

The turbo for my setup came in
    20171218_002113.jpg
It's a Garrett Gtx3071r (gen 2) with a .82 A/R... smaller then what most JZ guys run but it should be perfect for 450 wheel with a very quick spool.
The turbo is rated for 650 so if I ever want more power I can swap on the 1.06 A/R and easily get 550-600 wheel with quick response.

Lots of other parts are rolling in so I should have some more solid updates in the next couple of weeks. Still lots of work to do but I'm hoping to have the majority of the wiring done by year end.
