    Running:

2002 GMC 3/4 ton pickup. Used only when I need a truck, so it does about 2000 miles a year.

1975 BMW R75/6. Used just for fun stuff, like popping 400 miles north to catch the eclipse.

2000 Z3M Roadster. Actually my daily, but only going about 5-6K miles per year as I work from home. Like the bike, I like to chase horizons with it when I can.

    Not running:

1957 VW Beetle. I've had it nearly 30 years. I used to drive it all over Washington state when I was a bicycle racer. Working on its resurrection.

1965 VW Standard Microbus. A Really Big Project, not started yet.

I'm down to just the two VWs. These are the keepers. I spent over 25 years driving nothing else but ACVWs.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would motor about a little and see the other parts of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.

Ok, tie? I don't know enough about Ferrari's to distinguish between them, but I do know that having one in your stable make you a winner in this game (these are the only two so far, right?).

Love the 355. Would buy one, but many purists wouldn't like that I would do the work myself.

I've seen the documents for the engine out timing belt service on that car. Huge hassle.
Were the cracked headers a problem across all of them or certain year ranges?

Just replaced a set of headers on a neighbor's 355 proactively. Even that was a hassle (moreso getting the bulky stock ones out than refitting the aftermarket ones__not that they weren't without issue, like the thermocouple wells being comically too small; it's what you get for Ferrari Dollars).

I'm "supposed" to do the cam-belt service on it too, but I put the car back in the owner's garage as Irma approached__better for it be damaged there than in my garage! An oil analysis has revealed, combined with a visual clues, that it also needs the valve guides replaced, so might be more than the owner wants to rectify (or succinctly put, more $$,$$$.$$ than he can hide from his wife...).

Ralph, the 355 is a 3-1/2 ltr V-8 mid-engine'd sportscar (no slouch in straight-line or handling performance) while the 550 Maranello was a return to the classic front engine'd 5-1/2 ltr V-12 Gran Tourismo. Retro was in during the mid-'90s, and there were plenty of references made to the popular early '70s 365 GTB/4 Daytona model

I imagine the Ferrari ecu runs the car quite lean on full throttle to get the exhaust to melt like that. Good for maximum power I guess.

Hmm I wonder what ignition advance it runs as well.

Yes faulty manifolds were from 95-99. Cars are quite simple the entire subframe comes out. Easy to work on. I have heard of issues with bad manifolds on 360s and 430s although rare. Pretty crappy considering you pay so much for the car.

One nice thing about the 550, the motor does NOT need to come out to do any maintenance, short of a full rebuild. Reasons to prefer a Z3, I can do a full synthetic oil/filter change on the Z3 cheaper than I can buy 1, of the 2, oil filters for the 550. Now that I have the Z3... I think the 550 is going up for sale as I rarely drive the 550 any more.

First car I paid for was a 1964 VW Beetle. Easiest car in the world to work on (IMHO). Unless you had to replace the original exhaust. That was slightly more difficult.

jrkoupe I'm with you. I had a 348 once and I loved that car, but always wanted a 550. Hard to know that one might be for sale in Maine soon while i have two kids in college. Do they really need an education?

The roads here are not terribly conducive to driving the 550 like it is meant to be driven and I am certainly not taking it to Wally World or parking it on the city streets during tourist season. It takes about 15 minutes of HARD driving to get the tranny warmed up enough so it shifts smoothly. I am half tempted to block the tranny oil cooler to get it to warm up faster. On the other hand I have never driven a car that is quicker, faster, handles better, stops better than the 550 it is just an awesome machine, although my previous car was more fun to drive.
