Looking forward to following your progress!
Thanks for the share.
Hi Josh-
I remember that car auction on BAT and all the nasty comments about fake Alpinas etc.
Congrats on proving the reality and commencing a worthy project! LOVE the graphics.

I remember this car on BAT and all the moaning and groaning. Sometimes the comments on that site wear me out - nothing like a host of armchair quarterbacks providing their insight to something they know nothing about.
Your instincts paid off, congrats on your find.
I look forward to your updates.

For anyone interested. What a bunch of jackasses. I think mjweimer put it right. I get their perspective, selling something for what it is not is bad for BAT, but damn, their 'requests' were borderline ridiculous. definitely subscribing to the blog.

I remember that car being on Craigslist in Fullerton for a long time. Glad to see it ended up in good hands!
Thanks guys. Update on the blog on the stablemates for the Alpina. Soon to come: the removal and external inspection of the motor, with a little help form my 15 year old son.

Another update, this one on whether the Alpina motor was pilfered by the pirate mechanic or was still in there:

Sounds like you guys are having a blast!
Do you think the head and block numbers should match?
I'll be interested to know what, if any, differences you find in block and head once you get it apart for inspection. Knife edged crank? Windage tray? Fancy pistons? Large valves? Porting & polishing? (that intake port looks pretty smooth to me..) Fancy camshaft?
I, too, have failed in my attempts at faith healing my car with wishful thinking.
Do those cool graphics a favor and get yourself a couple nice fender covers to use while working on the car! Mine are magnetic along the top which helps them stay on a little better.
Personally I'd rebuild the original engine and put it back in the car, and not turn it into a resto-mod.
I wondered about the head and block too but the pics I got from another Alpina c1 owner (who is the original owner) show different numbers. And that sort of makes sense, as Alpina probably just built the bottoms and tops and took one of each off the shelves.
The head is definitely ported and polished -- but even with that, the ports are significantly smaller than 325i m20 ports. Alpina used a 268 cam and BMW a 264, both rather mild (lift unknown); compression was bumped up to 10.0:1 from (I believe) 9.5:1. Valves might be bigger, and I doubt they knife-edged the crank or put in a windage tray, but I'll know at some point....

Awesome! Your car must be super close to me, what shop are you using? Mine'll need painting down the line, and some minor rust repair as well. It looks like it's smoothing out nicely

The work is being done at Schatz & Krum. I've know the owner since we worked together at Berkeley BMW Salvage back in 1985, he a mere child (just graduated form high school, me law school). His daily driver was a box-flared, right-hand drive Japanese-market Alpina racecar, which he still has.

Too funny, that's a small world for you. I'm maybe a few miles away from the shop by the college. If I had to guess, he was the guy I ran into the other day at the coffee shop on the way to school who said he was restoring a 323 alpina. Maybe 45, short dark hair and tall?

Yup! That was me. He pegged the year by a glance at it. License plate holder, I think. I'm honestly not sure what the indication was for him. Of course, mine looks (and probably will sound) like crap compared to yours hahaha
