    I really (really) want to know how they got the HVAC controller up in the top position in the center console - there's just not (nearly) enough depth to relocate it there

    Isn’t the HVAC controller about the same depth as the MID? So it should fit depth wise...

    However, aren’t there shallow-depth double-din units now (eg. Mechless or Carplay units) that could fit in the upper 2 slots, allowing the HVAC controller to stay put?

    Not even close - about 3" too deep to fit in that spot
    Yes, there are some shallow depth DD units out there, but I don't have one nor will I be changing out my equipment anyway. (Even if one existed that supported my requirements - which I have yet to find)
