    Replacing the valve actuators

I've got a tic. So after I plan to check the oil pump (not getting any low oil pressure indications) what is the sequence for removing the cam to get to the actuators without dropping the chain off the crank pulley. The Bentley is of no help. It's an M60, no VANOS.

I dont think you will be able to successfully remove it without removing the camshaft pulley at least. The chain is pretty tight on the camshaft sprocket. You'd have to loosen the nuts holding the camshaft in order a 1/2 turn at a time from the outside edge to the inside. It is a little more involved than you think. The camshaft is hollow as well so be careful not to torque it too much when loosening the nuts as the hydraulic lifters will be pushing up on it.

The BMW TIS has great info, here is a section for the M60.

Scroll down and you will see about removal.

    Serge,
    Thanks for the link!

"It is a little more involved than you think" This appears to be true

I am going to be in the Boynton area after the first of the year. Time for coffee?

Yea its going to take some work but it's not impossible. I was ready to do this to replace bad lifters on the M62 but decided to live with it as I am not keeping the car.

And sure, I should have more time this time around. Was swamped with aviation classes and work, both full time, but I took some time off studying for now.
