    Spring under expansion tank?

I've been having problems with my cooling system and while removing the expansion tank from my 2001 BMW 330i I notice there is a spring and a metal piece resting inside the expansion tank mounting bracket. The metal piece was resting to the side of the spring but it seems as if it should fit inside if the spring. What is the correct placement and orientation of the spring and metal piece?

Thats your automatic transmission thermostat, now broken when the tank was removed. Happens every time.

    Yes, please.
removing the spring clip then twisting while pulling up with substantial force, knowing when it releases it will be sudden. Then placing the spring a valve undamged together then installing new new resivoir with lightly lubed o ring.

I can be done without haveing the thermostat broken.
