Hi guys haven't posted in awhile but I just totaled my n54 135. But I am looking at a 11 135 with the n55, that I will most likely go with since the 1 series is slowly decenigrating. I know they went single turbo in this model and made other adjustments. But the other n54 I had was modded nicely full exhaust, intake, and dyno tune pushin 375 hp and 400tq. Anybody one here have a modded n55, and how much power are you getting out of the car? I'm sure they are both great engines, but really what are the real numbers folks on here have attained with modded n55s??

Hello - from what I've read and heard, the N55 is not as 'tune-able' as the N54 motor is (current 08' 135i owner). The reliability of the N55 is far greater though, so it's a worthy investment just from that alone. Let me know if you find any further details, I've thought about upgrading myself in the future.

N54 is much more tuner friendly ... If your goal is max power, N54 is the easy choice
Comes down to reliability (n55) vs. power and imho, sound (n54). I just sold my 2008 335i (Dinan Stage 2) and bought a 2013 335i - in researching mods for the n55, there's just not as much out there and you don't get quite the same upside in power. Considering Dinan Stage 2 or JB4 at this point, but there's not as much low hanging fruit in terms of easy cheap power for the n55 that I can tell.
Thanks for the input everybody, I made a decision.
Correct the n55 can be just as powerful but its just a tad more pricy but that pays of with reliability and consistency, you start to see more no fly zones in California now with n55’s on pure turbo stage 2 taking out 750-800wheels n54s just depends on the budget and mods, tuners great potential but as a “home gamer” the n54 is better for cheaper power
