So I am saving my pennies to do the intake manifold gaskets on my car, hopefully before winter comes.
Questions:
Should I just stick with BMW OEM gaskets or would aftermarket work as well. Dont want to do this again.
What else should I be replacing while I am in there?
I need to get a list of things to order.
I would imagine spark plugs...I dont know what kind they are or how old they are.
If anyone had done the intake manifold gaskets before, how long did it take?
Are there any pitfalls to this job, I don't want to do like I did before...breaking something that I thought was small and turned out to be very expensive.
Thank you for reading this.
I just did my 1997 intakes when I did the head gaskets. Fairly easy to do. I never heard of aftermarket gaskets. All I ever found was the $550 set of OEM. I ended up using hylomar on my old gaskets since $550 for those is such a joke. Car runs fine but I have not smoke tested it yet.
Anyway, new vac lines, TB gaskets, new plugs for sure since it's cake to do them and make sure you have about 14 inches of extension for your 1/4 ratchet.
The whole job can be done in 6-8 hours for a first timer I would say and no pitfalls except make sure you do not drop hardware down the open intakes. I would spray some injector cleaner into your injectors when you get them out and replace the seals. I got tons of gunk out when I held them open with a 9v battery and sprayed them.

Don't buy the gaskets.
Reinzosil/Hylomar as said above and done.
Hi @Xboss, you wouldn't know where I can get the part number for the PCV, would you? tried Realoem website however exactly that picture does not have a number, "my friend" the specialist wants a small fortune for the job, claiming that he has to take the whole intake off, same porky that stealership will tell, at least them are not my "friends", car is 95' 740iL, symptoms are: smoke at startup and when stuck in traffic. I am going to try to change it with a buddy who has a garage but he hasn't done it before, there's a guy on youtube who changed it in 10 min.
Do you mean the rear manifold cover that does crank venting? Here is those, the boots sell seperate

Thanks for the link, I went to "stealership" and got the right part for V8, £54.00 with the gasket, cheeky specialist who claims is my friend wanted £178.11 (don't ask where the £0.11 from) plus 2 days labour, like BMW would charge, should have asked them for a quote, I will cut my dishonest pal loose and attempt to do this myself, quite a few videos on youtube, fingers crossed.
i highly recommend buying magnetic sockets for the intake manifold nuts. that, and a head-strap flashlight. came in handy when I did mine....

Hey guys,
I am getting ready to replace both the intake and valve cover gaskets on my 99 750il. I was able to find genuine BMW intake gaskets from a cali dealership for $412.
Would you suggest using the hylomar sealant only one or both sides of the intake gasket and valve cover gaskets?
Thanks
Well,
I'm no expert but I'm the last guy on this forum to have the heads off (6 weeks ago) and I would say yes, use a tiny film of hylomar because the intake mounting surfaces on both sides will have pitting and dings and such.
