M54 ticking after running hot laps- Normal?

Hi guys, figured I'd throw this in a thread of its own. After running hot laps nearly one after another yesterday at Ready Set Drift, I called the day about 15 mins earlier than I had to. My engine was ticking like mad. Oil level was good, I assume the oil was getting really hot, because I was running those laps pretty hard. Lots of time above 5500 rpm. Is lifter tick normal on these cars? it's only happened to me once before, after a really harsh donuts session. Anyone else get ticking lifters after some hard laps?

Note: the first time this happened, I did an oil change that did come out quite dirty. there was 5w-30 Mobil 1 Synth in the car, and I went t 5w-40 this time. Didn't run into it again until the end of the drift day.

I would put some thicker oil in your car (for ex. 15w50) and overfill it a little.
Have had ticking on S52 multiple times before...

Overfill it how much? I was running 7 quarts of 5w40, with a topoff quart of 5w-30. I'll try the thicker stuff, I'm a bit worried about 15w being too thick on cold starts, and having tapping then.

I always ran mine half a quart over full, the lifters would deflate if I sat on the bank too long, 15/40 helped too.

+1 for half a quart overfill
Also you can try a 10w oil if your worried about 15w being to thick (I'm in Southern California so I don't have to worry about stuff like that lol)
