    Headliner Question

1992 325i - the headliner is start to pull off and is sagging in a lot of spots. If I understand correctly there is a fiberglass tray that is secured to the roof that holds the soft headliner material secured with a bunch of glue. Is there any reason other than aesthetics that I can't just take the whole thing out and leave it out? How bad is it going to be? Is there wiring or anything else between the fiberglass tray and the roof?

Theres some wires up front that control the dome lights and sunroof motor. Best bet is to just pull the fabric out and leave the fiberglass tray in place.

That leaves a fuzzy mess, IMO. Is this for a track car?
I have seen those things painted, which isn't too bad for a track car.

Yeah it's track only. I wouldn't mind painting it but to be honest I was trying to avoid dealing with the mess of old adhesive.

    remove the headliner
    peel off the headliner fabric
then spray it with fabric paint / spray

You'll have all the benefits of a headliner but with none of the sagging !

Can I spray that over the remaining glue residue or does that have to come off?

Pull the headliner out and it will all be clear to you. When the fabric is pulled off some residue will remain on the headliner, but it's easy to scrape off.

I painted mine with truck bed liner. If I had a dark colored car I probably would've just left the headliner out. I saw a Daytona Violet with it removed and you didn't really notice, but with my bright red roof it was more obvious something was missing(the inside roof is the same color as your car). I love the way the headliner looks painted, but without the extra thickness from the fabric the edge that meets the rear window doesn't stay tucked in. Haven't had time to mess with it and figure out a solution yet.

Track car, get the whole mess out of there. While my car was slowly transforming to dedicated track car the headliner started to sag. If it don't make it go any faster it goes. Grab and rip but I would lose the whole thing. If you decide to leave the fglass in take a shop vac and a plastic bristle brush and you make short work of the adhesive and foam left behind.
