Knowing most of these blowers actually run fine on dirty motor oil, personally I can't imagine iT could be that hypercritical, and one would suspect ATF is exactly the right kind of fluid for the application (temps and stresses can't nearly approach that of an actual auto so one would think it'd even be overspecified...) So seems pretty plausible that's the deal.
I heard the same. Also, sometimes people adding esters on it.
