The paintwork cleared up amazingly well. I do wonder how thin it is now though, it looked really faded. Looking forward to the interiors cleaning too!

    Time for an update.

The crossbeam was rotted beyond repair. I had to fabricate up a new one since I don't believe BMW makes this piece (at least I couldn't find it). The corner sections were still ok so I cleaned them up and rewelded.

While poking around discovered driver side wheel well had some rust on the bottom. Ended up cutting out and redoing the whole corner.

Very nice. One day I'll do this to my silver ix, not looking forward to it.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...

You actually did a really good job replacing rust ate up metal, but I just don't see the merit in doing so. For everything you can reach there is twice as much lurking in an inaccessible area waiting to get back to work destroying. As readily available as rust free E30's are it seems silly to add it the list of restoration work needed, I don't feel like these cars are rare enough to justify the effort.

Having grown up in New England, and having moved to south as an adult.... its nice to not live in a climate that sprinkles car-decomposer on the road all winter. Rust gives me the heeebejeebeees.

You are absolutely right that the piece you ended up fabricating isn't available to purchase by itself,

rust repair in canada is as natural as flood repair where you reside. repairing it's just another skill you acquire if you want to own an older or interesting vehicle. the e30's i see have actually held up better than most things i see from the same era. probably a testament of their value to the owners over the rust proofing bmw gave them.

my friend owns an auto resto business and would definitely disagree how hard they are to repair. there really isn't anywhere that is inaccessible as you claim. it depends more on skill level and commitment. for the most part stripping it is harder than the actual repair. the same goes for near any auto.

This is more about the journey than the end result. I wasn't looking to buy an E30 when I got this car. I always liked them and thought they were neat and it would be cool to have one but that was it. This car just fell into my lap and I went with it. And now that I have it I want to fix it.

Rust free E30s in Ontario are selling for close to 10 grand and I would never pay that much. Simply because I am not that big of an E30 enthusiast. There are other cars I would much rather have. I am working on it because it's a project and I enjoy working on cars and seeing the results of my work, making something out of nothing.

I hear ya about it being about the journey, I don't really want to drive mine so much as enjoy the rebuild process, the thorough OCD indulgence, and the resulting creampuff that'll sit in the garage. I missed the part about you being up in Canada on the first go round, I do imagine its tough to find something rust free up there.

The last one I built went something like this:

Hey guys does anyone know where to obtain a replacement pipe that runs under the back seat and holds fuel vapor lines?

This post shows pictures of the part.

Is there perhaps a better solution that won't rust out made of plastic or similar?

Replacing that piece of tube will be absolutely no fun!

I would have it electroplated for corrosion resistance (just like nuts, bolts etc are) and then tack weld it in place. Bathe the outside in brushable undercoating and then spray cosmoline though the internal bore. The cosmoline will both lubricate the bore to pass the hoses, and provide another layer of protection.

I got the old piece out without much trouble but so far no luck finding a replacement. I can't even find a straight piece of pipe in that diameter.

what's the od of the pipe ? might be able to pick something up at a metal supplier and have it bent at an exhaust shop. just a thought.

Gonna have to measure the pipe again. One of the larger metal supplies here didn't have anything in this exact diameter. I did find a piece of plastic pipe in the exact diameter but bending it to shape might be tough.

Would anyone have a picture of rear brake line routing as it came from the factory. Mostly interested in the area where the lines come into the 3 way split.

Thanks a bunch! It won't let me zoom in but I can see what I am after. Would you happen to have a picture of brake line routing in the fuel filter area?

Also I am trying to figure if I have all the required parts from this diagram or if something was missing on my car. Does M42 use all the crap shown in this image? It looks like I have all the bracketry in place but then there is only a single fuel filter #8 that is attached with a hose clamp #9. Are all the other brackets for different models?

Its a long single piece line from the proportioning valve under the brake booster, to the 3way tee between the ebrake cable tubes. It routes around the fuel filter/subframe area hugging the rockel panel. Sorry I don't have a better picture of that handy.

On a M42 318iS most of that junk isn't used. The #1/2 bracket is there suspended on 3x #3 with the #18 tie plate. The fuel filter itself is held to the bracket with 2x #10.

Thanks for the info. I guess all the extra junk that was there for other models.

The good news is rear undercarriage is just about done. Not sure if Schultz comes in gray to match the OEM finish but the stuff that I got came in black.

Now the bad news. Started poking the floor in the driver's area and poked a rather large hole. After yanking the carpet and doing some more poking discovered a rather large hole. Looks like it rusted out from the inside so water must've been getting into the driver floor area.

I think I finally found the stuff that is same or similar to what was used at the factory for undercoating. If you factor is dirt and discoloration over the years that's probably the same color.

Cleaned up the driver's floor today and fabbed up the patch panel. Will be welding in the next couple of days.

Fabbed up a patch panel and welded it in. Still gotta clean up the welds and seal it.

You're not a bad panel beater. Prime/paint that, cover it in some new sound deadener, and no one would know.

So here is a question for the experts. The rear body panel on my car is quite rotted out and rather than replacing bits and piece I figured it would be easier to replace the whole thing. It is part 2 in the image below.

The part number that is listed for my car is 41348121771. When I Google that part I get a picture of a panel with what looks to be a cut out for dual exhaust tip. My car has a single tip. Is the image shown not correct or is the part not correct?

Now I also found this part. 41341961518 but when looking it up on realoem.com it shows up for 82-85 which would not be correct for my car. The panel that is pictured is not for 92-85 though but rather a later model E30 which is what I have. Now I am sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out who screwed up. realoem.com or distributors that have wrong images shown?

So anyone know what the correct part number is for rear tail panel for 91' 318IS with single tail pipe cutout?

It is not a catalog issue sir, BMW stopped making the US M42 318i specific rear tail panel. The one you have pictured below is listed as a euro spec item. Not sure what is actually different aside from license plate mounting. I'd wager to guess you could use it fine. That is the right way to go about repairing major rot on the panel, but you're SOL on the exhaust cutout unless yours is in decent shape and you want to transfer just that section over to the new panel as a filler.
