    Oil warning light

This normally comes on when the key turns and the system gets checked. It has stopped coming on and I haven't seen the caution light either when I normally do. I did just add a quart. It was low.

Since my last oil change it has worked fine until just recently. 2001 330ci. Any ideas? Thx

You can google the instrument cluster test for the e46 to see if the light works. If not, it may just be that the bulb is burned out.

Thx. System checks good. So why would the red oil light not come on every time I turn the key? And why did the yellow oil light not come on when the level was down? Thx

Not trying to contradict, but I thought the last 3-series that came with bulbs were the E-36. I had thought that the E-46's were all LED's for the lamps to extend the life of the bulbs.

Anywho, in INPA you also have a lamp test for the dash inside the test pattern.

Also you can test by grounding the connector to the block to see if the lamp comes on, which should be red. If the lamp comes on, then I would have a look at the Oil pressure sending unit.

Darin, you are correct. The E46 dash has LEDs.

You have two separate sensors here:

    1) Pressure sensor for the red lamp located on the Oil Filter housing.
    2) Level sensor located in the oil pan for the yellow lamp.

So with that thought in mind, the extended oil changes can cause the pressure switch to stick, that is why I would like for you to test the circuit by grounding the wire to the engine housing to see if the lamp comes on. This will tell us that there is no problem on that end, and the line is good.
Second, the level sensor is known for going bad after 10 years of use. I would wait for your next oil change and replace it then if it isn't working properly.
