The engine block has a number stamped into the aluminum down near the bottom where the oil pan attaches, just below/behind where the left side (sitting in car) engine mount arm attaches to the block.

Both engines are Duel VANOS and look the same. If checking the engine stampings is too hard, then get the part number off the DISA valve. Run it through RealOEM and see which engine it is for. The M52TUB25 DISA is smaller than the M54B25 DISA.

I Googled "25 6s 4" BMW. Everything I'm seeing indicates it's an M52, though it appears it could have come from either an E46 or an E39.

For comparison purposes, here is a photo of an MS43 (early) M54B30 engine code:

    You have a M52TUB25 = M52 with technical upgrade, 2.5 L.

The M52TUB was the beta design for the M54 Engine with improved cooling water flow through the head/block and duel VANOS. This means that you can swap either a M52TUB or M54 engine in the same spot, wiring loom matches and ECU works. If you change the capacity of the engine (from 2.5 L to 3.0 L) then you need to tune the ECU to match the new engine.
