Hello bimmer folks,
I've learned so much on this forum that I though I should post something that might be helpful for someone.
My old E39 2001 525i was loking a bit shoddy so I sent the car for a deep clean and I didn't drive it for a few days afterwards.
When I tried it was completely dead. Battery totally discharged, even unable to operate central locking- had to use the key. Maybe the cleaning company left a light on or something.
I tried a jump start with one of those battery pack things but there was insufficient power.
Called the local Auto assist organisation and they jumpstarted for me. At that point I noticed that the OBC was not working and fuel guage was not working.
Auto assist guy said it takes about 10-15 minutes for the OBC to restart after a dead battery (confirmed in the BMW handbook) I drove aalmost and hour to recharge battery still no OBC, Whilst driving, the fuel guage was clicking and jumping from full to empty, or sometimes settling to display empty, rev counter not working, no mileage display etc.
Display monitor working but cannot set time and date and so on in the OBC.
Other wise car driving well.
SOLUTION:
I looked at the fuse panel in the glove compartment and checked every fuse related to the OBC and displays. They looked ok but I also took them out and reseated them (if in doubt- do it - it only takes a few seconds to work through the whole panel if you like)
I found no faulty fuse but after reseating a few I tried again and all systems are go :-)
maybe it was just a bad contact or maybe the OBC needed to be reset by removing the fuse. Either way, give it a try, its quick and costs nothing. Hope its hepful to someone.
