I own a 1997 316i sedan formerly turboed then I decided to get an engine swap to a M50B25TU with a Active Autowerke supercharger kit. Recently I just got the car for the following mods: UUC fly wheel, uprated clutch, LSD (3.91), mishimoto radiator, electric fan, stewart pump, 140W alternator and a pair of Recaro speeds. After 2 months of waiting for parts and installation I was able to get the car from the shop. The next morning it rained hard and it took only a few seconds while driving I noticed my engine stalling. FLASH FLOOD. So my engine is dead now, broken rods and some cracks to the block.
I'm here thinking about getting an S52 but use my C30 rotrex supercharger kit. Do you think it's a good idea or stick with an M50 and rebuild mine?
I'm just sad I only got to drive it for less than 10kms then disaster struck literally.
Buy a used M52 or S52. Either will give you more displacement tban the M50. Since your motor hydrolocked the block could be damaged inside and not rebuildable. Only one way to find out.
so would you consider the S52 a good swap for my M50? is it more difficult to maintain or more or less the same?
Wow, that sucks. Sorry to hear your bad news.
I would go with an M52 platform. 328 parts are easier to find than M3 and are considerably cheaper. You could always stick with the m50 as well, there usually even more cheaper and easier to find than the m52's/S5X
I've finally decided to go with a S52, I just hope the C30 rotrex supercharger will be fine because I don't want to spend on a new c38
OMG i just payed for an S52 and it costs so much especially shipping it to my country!
Well, being only available in a US spec E36 M3 does make them not super common as far as BMW engines of that vintage go...
I think it was a good purchase and a lot of aftermarket stuff are available for the S52 compared to a M3 euro engine. Can't for it to get here. I'm also glad that I can use my C30 supeprcharger. I was able to see the archives of active autowerke and the older kits used the C30.
