Has anyone with a 2011 535xi ever experienced a broken valve spring, or to that matter any N55 engine?
So I brought my 2011 F10 with 120k on the dash in after suddenly getting the drive train malfunction indicator... had the vehicle scanned by an indy BMW / EURO shop, they said misfire C3. Brought it to the dealer, they say misfire C2, and that I need new injectors, for bank 2, and a coil for C3. After a week now, my SA calls and says now I need a new valve spring cause that is what caused the misfire... a broken valve spring on C4.?? I'm at a loss here, for the life of me, I can't understand how I go from a misfire in C3, to a broken valve spring in C4.
I think this is unheard of... I've googled and googled to no avail trying to find issues as such, and have come up empty. I've never heard of a valve spring breaking on the N55... for that matter I've driven a 93 Ford Escort to 585k one motor no valve or piston issues... and that was in the late 90's, surely this motor is better built than that old Ford 4 banger..
I've never heard of come across this before. I know that there was a slight possibility of this happening to older BMWs; but definitely not to newer motors. It seems like either the indie shop or dealership has some issue - the fact that they read a misfire code in cylinder 3 then another place read it on cylinder 2 and then another issue....take it to another shop and get a 3rd opinion. Maybe borrow or get a reader/scanner yourself and see what stored codes you pull. Just my 2 cents, best of luck!

I have never seen a broken valve spring on an N55. That doesn't mean that it can't happen though.

I've diagnosed, seen and repaired several N54's with springs that broke for no apparent reason. Haven't seen it happen to a N55 as of yet, but they are a considerably younger engine still.

That's surprising. I've literally only ever seen 3 broken springs in 12 years in the business. 2 on S65, 1 on S85. I just figured it was a flaw in that motor being that the two engines are nearly identical, minus 2 cylinders
