Engine cavitates (shaking)

2002 325ci, 231,000. I am not sure how to explain the sensation. During the cold months, I start the car and let it warm up. When I start driving there is a sensation that the engine is shaking or cavitating. If I turn off the engine and restart, the shaking sensation is gone. This only happens with the morning start. Any ideas?
