A few years ago the six Disk CD Changer went on the fritz and so I replaced it with a used one on eBay. Today I ran across this digital CD Changer on eBay and thought it worth a mention for those who want to get rid of the CD Changer but maintain its functionally without replacing the old cassette radio and cheaper than my replacement Changer. It ships from China. The second link show that a Bluetooth addon module is available. Not sure how the mic works when the module is in the trunk. The second link also has a photo of the trunk installation.

It works and most corner audio shops can install it, I have one on my Honda Accord and Mercedes W11, You can use a usb flash drive with them as well and still maintain your oem look in your cars, There are other similar items that look different but do the same, Great product for those who want a variety of music and Bluetooth cabability but with the stock look, They are terribly under priced for what they are capable of.
The trunk storage cubby on the E46 convertibles is a perfect solution for the hole in the carpet trim should you remove the CD changer.
That setup will not work on an E31. The CD changer wiring is totally different.
Olin wouldn't it work with this kit?

No, the E31 does not have DSP.
These kits communicate with the head unit using IBUS protocol present on 96+ BMWs (with the exception of the E31 which kept the pre-IBUS CD changer cables) You could make the kit work by swapping out the head unit to a newer one from another model, like the E36 cassette player 96-99, or a CD43 and adding the newer cable though.

You do need a CD43 head unit, but you don't need to change any cabling. I just did this to my car, and it works great. I've had a CD43 for a number of years. This is the one I used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-Mu...-/222415444016 It's also a little less expensive.
