    650i Cranking, but NOT STARTING.

My 2007 650i, started dying while on the road, a few months back. All I had to do was shut it off completely, crank it again and it would run ok for a few weeks at a time. Then it got more frequent, being just a few days before it would shut off again. More recently, it was down to hours, and then it never started again.
FYI, another issue going on for about the same time period is the transmission shifting to 2nd or 3rd gear on its own and staying at that gear, running very roughly. This is accompanied by a fault message (see attached.) That issue would also be fixed if I shut the car off completely and crank it again. This had no apparent frequency pattern.
I wonder if the issues might be related, though they have never happened at the same time.
    Some facts:
    • The battery is new and fully charged.
    • The starter cranks normally.
    • There was no noise at the fuel pump when the ignition is on, or when the starter is cranking, so I removed the fuel pump and put 12 V to the motor. It turned on hard!
    • I then checked power at the lines to the motor. There is no voltage coming from them when the ignition is on, or when the starter is cranking.
    • I then checked all the fuses in the trunk and all were fine.

I checked around 10 threads here, but no situation is like mine.
I am out of ideas. I need your help!!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Will

Hi Will and welcome to the forum! Before spending any money on parts, I would suggest pulling the codes. Even if the fault message goes away after restarting the car, there are likely stored codes that will likely give you a definitive answer as to what the issue is. Hope this helps a bit and best of luck!

    I've pulled the IVM.
I'll post pics of what I've done so far as soon as things get better from the hurricane...
    Thx to all!

Here are pics (attachment rotation is 90° cclockw of how they're in my gallery & can't edit message) of the IVM, both sides of it's board, and where I pulled it from.

All the components look good, so do all the soldering.
I guess the IVM could still be bad??
    Help!!!

Also, would someone please tell me what these modules are?:

I know this response is a year later, but I wanted to post a response for anyone else who comes across this and also has intermittent start issues coupled with intermittent transmission faults. Definitely symptomatic of a bad IVM. IVMs for e63/e64 motors sell on eBay for about $99, but amazingly I was actually able to get a new one from the dealership for $149. Hope this helps someone jumping to the assumption that they have a bad starter. It’s a much cheaper and easier fix trying to replace the starter ($50 on eBay, $238 parts store, $604 from the stealership!).

Thanks very much for giving the solution to your problem - open-ended threads are useless, but a solution makes it all worth while!
