I have a 2000 z3 with a 2.5 and yesterday the engine blew.. only 135k but I've found a 2.8 for 500.. my question will it plug and play like the 2.5? Winter time I will be putting my ls1 in. Also I got an m5 rear end with the car will it fit for my ls swap? Otherwise I'm going to use a ctsv rear
M5 and CTSV rear will not fit without seriously major modification. We would be talking custom rear subframe modifications, new custom driveshaft, custom halfshafts etc..
I have the same car that you do.
The stock 3.15 (if you have a manual, auto is 3.46 i believe) 188mm Torsen LSD is sufficient to handle the rated power of an ls1. I rebuilt a 53k mile diff I bought to replace my worn out squealing one.
That said, if you are wanting to part with your m5 diff, I may be interested for projects later down the road.
You should flash the ecu to 2.8 for correct operation. Otherwise plug and play.

Also found a 3.0 will it fall right in? And mate to the 5speed? Or is it a lot of work?
Check your VIN Decode to see which 2.5 L engine you have, so you know your starting point. You are at the cut over point between the M52TUB25 and the M54B25. Both these engines are duel VANOS. This means that you need a Duel VANOS engine to swap in.
Options are:
- M52TUB25, straight swap
- M54B25, straight swap
- M52TUB28, flash DME for this engine
- M54B30, flash DME for this engine
Note: a M52B28 single VANOS engine will not work for you.

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
