    Rotten Eggs

My wife called me about a rotten egg smell in and around the car. The alternator was replaced due to a quick clicking and some other pulleys about 3 weeks ago

Could my battery just have played out in the process? I did have to jump the car this morning

I can test it later tonight when she gets home

"The smell of rotten eggs is due to a compound called hydrogen sulfide. This comes from the small amount of sulfur that is present in the fuel. ... Two other causes of rotten eggs besides a broken catalytic converter include an engine that is running too hot or a broken fuel pressure regulator."

    Lifted form another site.

It was the battery. After $200 for a new one. I pulled the old one. Swollen and leaking.

My wife just text she still is getting the increased discharge alert from the car

Will this go away in a few days? I didn't see where a reprogram was needed with my car and everything seems to be normal otherwise. All I had to do swapping the battery was date and time

This isn't a delayed thing that fixes itself so it won't just go away.

This is probably related to why you needed a new alternator and fried your battery. Keep looking before you need to replace those again.

Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

I would suggest that you reprogram for the new battery, even if you replaced it with a battery with the same specs (type and capacity). It may not have been programmed properly in the first place, and may be part of the reason your old battery failed. That's what happened to me - and it was a BMW dealership no less that didn't properly program it, which resulted in premature battery death.

Swollen batteries can be caused by overcharging, and that can be caused by a bad alternator ... or if the ECU things the battery is of a higher capacity than it actually is (i.e. not programmed properly).

Also, I would surmise that if your battery isn't being properly charged, the ECU may incorrectly assume it is discharging too fast and throw those codes; so get it programmed correctly (or at least verify it is correct) and then go from there.

The battery that was replaced and the alternator were factory original

    I will check into programming

    Thanks!
