    That's great, thanks!

So this is an essentially stock 2000 540iT with approximately what mileage? And what were the weather conditions?

I don't think you did badly. Your 60ft time might be able to be made a little better through practice, and that would help out your ET (time to 1320'), but it wouldn't make a big improvement to your trap speed, which is why I keep harping on trap speeds. This is a good data point!

About the shift mode difference, with autos I do think it's a good idea to try them out. It could very well work the way you described by keeping it in regular "D" mode since you have VANOS. It would be interesting to know.

It was 81°F with a humidity of 15%. There was a slight breeze, but it was a pretty pleasant night.

It’s a mechanically stock 540it with zero mods, just maintenance done. 195,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. Tires are Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2’s in the front and Continental Extremecontact DW in the rear.

One other thing I did that somebody later told me was unnecessary was a burnout before each run, since I’m running street tires and not slicks. Oh well, it was fun!

    There are no "unnecessary" burnouts

I took my 540i/6 once ~6 years ago? Was the first time at the drag strip.

    Best pass was 13.914 @100.97mph and a 2.181 60'

166,000 miles and original clutch at the time. Clutch was starting to give up in this video, my best time came on a pass earlier in the day when the clutch was holding. Only mods were a resonator delete ("Y" and rear dummy can), Zionsville radiator, EAC Coilovers, and Swaybars. Still running the open 2.81 diff, stock trans, etc etc. Nothing at all done to the engine. Tires were Hankook RS3's on stock 17" wheels.

I don't think I ever got back after doing the lightweight flywheel and SBC Clutch which really sucks. Curious to see what if any time the lighter flywheel and aggressive clutch could have gained. I've had that car for 10+ years now, it's always seemed the motor was a bit healthy in the power department, but since it finally tanked at 235k (rod bearings) now I'll never know. New motor will be going in, but won't be apples to apples.

Yeah, when I dyno'd it 10 or so years ago it created quite a stir. Didn't help that the first dyno run in 2007 something funny happened at the top end. 2008 dyno runs looked better. Actually lost power by doing the exhaust mod, wonder if i could have trapped faster with the factory setup? More area under the curve, but 48lbs more weight too.

Whoa, 270 on a Mustang is solid! And it shows in your trap. (even if that was the slightly less average power setup at a bit lower weight)

Interesting to see what a difference having a manual makes. The automatic does suck some power and the lag in shifting is obvious in the lower trap speeds.

    Could that be correct??
    Only a 12HP drivetrain loss?

Mustangs are notorious for reading low or "conservative" or whatever, so I'd say his engine was making better steam than the factory rating. That's not uncommon for M62s, is it Jim?

I didn't read thru his whole link, was the engine stock?
From what I've read here and on a few other forums the non vanos guys usually say their engines are making more HP than the vanos engines.
Never seen an A/B dyno, same day, same dyno.

I hit the dragstrip last night so I'll post up:

2001 540i/6 speed. 14.0112 @ 98.25mph. The engine has 207k on the clock, has had chain guides and vanos service recently and is stock other than a muffler delete and cold air intake. The car has a 2.81 quafe LSD and is on 18x10 apex arc-8's with 275/35 Sumitomo HTR-Z III's. I was hoping to break in to the 13's, but didn't quite make it. I'm not a drag racer, so my reaction times were terrible.

I'm in the left lane, right lane was an m62/6 speed swapped e34 525i with custom 8 in to 1 long tube headers, Dudmd tune, cold air intake and 3.23 gears. He stalled on launch on this run, but was otherwise edging me out all night with a best run of 13.92.

yep, he ranged from 99.51 to 100.36mph on the 3 time slips I have from him. His best was a 13.92@99.84mph

Awesome, thank you!! That really illustrates why I have been harping on trap speed as a nice solid indicator of how well a car accelerates, or said another way, effective power to weight ratio.

I went back to the drag strip last week with the 2000 540it, the only thing I changed was airing down the rear tires from 38psi to 30psi, along with keeping the transmission in D. I consistently did better than last time, with my best time being a 14.88. Trap speed is still around 91-92mph no matter what, I just launched a bit better I guess.

That would be GREAT Jim! If my 540 is still in one piece after this weekend (drifting), I'm hoping to get out one more time myself. One of my "local" tracks about 90 minutes away is open until mid-November.

I know you are aware of the status of my shenanigans at this point, but to avoid having an unanswered question hanging here, I'll summarize. MS3+MS3X is completed, and is partially installed. I had a very encouraging drifting test session on the DME a couple days ago, that made me feel pretty confident about running it for drifting this weekend. I still feel a little better about having the MS3 controlling fueling for this weekend if things go smoothly. No predictions from me right now!

To update, I did not go to the drifting event with the 540 after doing some "drift testing" with it. The results weren't bad, but I really needed a bit of extra negative camber in the front end, and I didn't have enough time to deal with that and get the MS3 up and tuned as well as I wanted in time, so I sold my spot to another guy who wanted in.

I did get the MS3 setup all installed and nicely tuned since then though, and I hit the drag strip last night for the last open night of the year around here. Until I read my datalogs a little more closely, I'm going to say that these runs were at 10-11psi max boost since I was seeing 160-170s kPa readings when I was glancing through the logs. The bad (likely no) track prep hurt my 60ft times and ETs of course, but overall the car didn't pickup power like it should have. I think this turbo is about out of steam:
