    Hard shifting

Been having this issue since i purchased the car. I changed fluid and filter to the correct level but did not solve the issue. Other than possible worn tans mounts, is there a sensor associated with the transmission that could be causing this?
Any help would be much appreciated

assuming we are talking about a manual does it happen in EVERY gear? if it doesnt (only happens in low gears say 1st to 2nd) and it improves as the car gets warmer then you have worn syncros. to remedy needs a trans rebuild or let the car idle for 10 mins before you drive off every time.

The OP is more likely referring to a 4HP24 auto trans. Can try to drop the pan and clean the valves, but it isnt much fun and may not fix things. Obviously, check your mounts and guibos first. According to the guys that actually do remanufacture the 4HP24's still, do not use synthetic fluid either. Apparently, that can not only cause rough hard shifting but also is the most common cause of 4th gear going away completely.

    Sorry, it's the 4hp24..minor detail.
I'll inspect the guibo but doubt that's the issue. Thanks for the feeback.

Double check the fluid level. Its not that difficult to rebuild the valve body.

Thanks, I'll check past posts on the valve rebuild and see if it's a DIY project.

Btw, is it not counterintuitive to have the trans fluid dipstick tip in black? Drives me crazy trying to figure out the level.

Not really a DIY but this will give you an idea of what is involved

But as XAlt suggested, there is a gauze filter in one of the solenoids that sometimes gets clogged. I believe Shogun has a DIY on that somewhere.

I'm planning to do this job soon. I read Shogun's DIY and it seems manageable.

What fluid is best for the 4 speed? I am planning to use Redline D4.

valve body rebuild 4HP22/24 on my website http://twrite.org/shogunnew/files/ja...Valvebody.html
Important is that you clean the metal screen in front of this solenoid valve http://e32b12.blogspot.jp/search/label/4HP24
when you scroll down further, you see also that the ATF filter O-rings sometimes do not fit from cheapo aftermarket filters, pay attention to that, otherwise air can be sucked there with the ATF and the infamous whining of the trans starts

To the OP... finding a rebuilt VB is getting more and more challenging. But I can tell you with Shogun's guide, it's actually a pretty easy DIY.

He can send his valve body to there for reman, no problem. I can also do that, but I am too far away and shipping is too costly and time consuming.

Where's the best place to get the necessary parts to reman, including the filter O ring? I may give it a go. I'm sure it's harder than it looks but your instructions are terrific.

Ross1 had very good experience with Eriksson, even with small parts like orifices https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...light=orifices
he called them, told them the serial number of the trans, stuecklistennummer of the trans and they checked and shipped him the parts quickly http://zftranspart.com/
http://www.zftranspart.com/index.php...parent=46&pg=1 looks like they also have reman valve bodies
Filter kit with o-ring and pan gasket I bought from FCP EURO, they have the Meistersatz kits, made in Taiwan, have used already quite a number of them w/o any probs. Make sure you get the set with the filter with the long neck, there are kits for 4HP22 which almost look same, but the filters have the short neck for 4HP with shallow ATF pan like E30 etc.
Or buy also from Eriksson, they also have kits

In case you really want to disassemble the valve body, in any case you need the paper gasket between the plates of the valve body, on the 4HP22 and 4HP24 they are sticking to the plates and usually break when disassembling the VB.
Part number is ZF 1043 328 080 for the 4HP24, and also probably new plastic balls. In case you are not in a hurry, disassemble and check what you need and then order what is required.
That will be cheaper, because from the valve body repair kits like they are available for 5HP18 and 5HP30, most of the parts are not absolutely necessary, example http://www.zftranspart.com/index.php...d=52&parent=40

There are no valve body kits available for 4HP, because too many changes and paper gaskets etc., must be ordered by serial number and stuecklistennummer.

I had a similar issue and finally went the route of replacing the VB with one coming from a 750 E32 4HP24...( far cheaper than one from a 4HP24 from a 850 ). I cleaned it with brake cleaner, and bye-bye hard shifting.

The original one is sitting at my garage waiting for me to find time to do some extensive cleaning...

One photo from both Valve Bodies and a link to the post ( in spanish but plenty of photos )
